We can observe the planets with our eyes, binoculars, or a telescope and many planets are viewable during many different times of the year. There are many on-line resources that can tell you when and where they will appear, as well as many periodicals which chart the planets’ paths. Would you like some resources to help you along your planetary discovery path? Then here are a few of my favorites:
- Your Sky: Planet Catalog (includes star charts and all browser friendly)
- Stellarium Software (free download)
- Heavens Above (all browser friendly and includes asteroid information)
- Sky & Telescope – Interactive Sky Chart (requires java)
- AstroViewer (interactive and downloadable)
- Western Washington University – Planet Finder (requires java and some experience)
- Light and Matter Planet Finder (multi-lingual, applet requires java)
- McDonald Observatory – StarDate On-Line (two month general information)
- David Chandler – Yearly Planet Locator Charts (pdf files)
